A new generation connecting with our war veterans
Year nine drama students from Merredin College visited Karrakatta Cemetery today as part of their excursion to Perth, visiting key locations pivotal to their study this term. The students paid their respects to Martin O’Meara during a wreath-laying ceremony at his grave.
The students have been role-playing life in the trenches during World War I and learning about Martin O’Meara who served in the 16th battalion. O’Meara was awarded a Victoria Cross for his conspicuous bravery, retrieving wounded soldiers from the battle lines during heavy fighting over four days at Pozieres in France.
Freshwater Bay Primary students together with representatives from RSLWA Claremont placed wooden crosses on unmarked graves of WWI veterans during a recent visit as part of the “School Cross Project’ which provides students a great opportunity to learn about our war veterans and understand the sacrifices made.
